Rio Tourist Maps
In this page you can see what I think are the best tourist maps of Rio de Janeiro City. Both maps give us, from my point of view, one the best pictorial description of the city, in terms of areas, districts, attractions and monuments. What I like in both maps is that, at once we can have a really comprehense view of the city landscape with its shore and mountains.
The first map, you can see immediately below it is a free map that is given away to tourists and travellers. Yes, it distributed by some company as gift to promote its brand.
In the map you can see the main tourist areas of the city and the most famous districts such as Copacabana and Ipanema among others. You can see that, the City of Rio de Janeiro settlements are surrounded by Guanabara Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, and range of mountains. Some mountains, mounts and lakes ares also in the middle of the city. The Tijuca Forest or the main green areas of the city cover the range of mountains named Tijuca Massif. In the map, you can see that Tijuca Massif and Forest, roughly speaking, it spreads from Gloria Neighbourhood till São Conrado Neighbourhood.
The city has two main airports. In The Ilha do Governador (Governor´s Island) there is the Galeão International Airport which is also know as GIG. The Santos Dumont Airport, also known as SDU is used for domestic flights and is located next to city centre or downtown.
In the following picture, you can see an touristic map of Rio de Janeiro that is usually given away to traveller and visitors by Riotur, the official touristi bureau of Rio. There are some touristic information points in the city where you can get free city maps. There are several types available.
The map you see above shows only the most important tourist areas of the south zone of the city along with city centre till Maracanã Stadium which is located in Marcana District. Click on the map to see it enlarged on another window. In this vision you can see very clearly the Corcovado Mount with the Christy Statue in the center and the Sugar Loaf Mount mount on the lower right corner.
Actually, the picture you see above is an extract of the entire map you can see below.
This map has a more precise pictorial representation considering scale and the real landscape as it exists in fact. This illustatrative representation of the city shows not only the touristic areas but areas that are too far from the spolights.
In the map, from the right to left we can see Barra da Tijuca neighbourhood, then Pedra da Gávea Rock, São Conrado District and beach, Two Brothers Mount, Leblon and Ipanema District and Rodrigo de Freitas Lake (also know as lagoon) in the middle of the map, near the bottom.
Toward the left, we can see the Arpoador Rock, Copabacana Beach and District, the Leme Hill and Urca and Sugar Loaf Mounts. Botafogo district with its cove, Flamengo beach and Gloria cove are also seen in the map.
Santos Dumont Airport SDU is seen near City Centre or Downtown. You can also see Rio Niteroi Bridge, one of the longest bridges on earth. Rio Internation Airport is in the foreground, near the right top corner of the picture. Actually, the GIG is in the Governor´s Island (Ilha do Governador) which is also part of Rio de Janeiro City.
